Last time I met with the Angels of the North, it was at the Premiere of their 8 part box set on BBC Iplayer in October 2021. Now it’s coming to BBC Three which this week returned as a linear freeview channel.
The spokesman for the show describes the Angels of the North as being about:
“driven and dedicated business owners and athletes from working-class families, all passionate about making something of themselves and reaching for the top. They are role models smashing down the walls of the ‘typical’ reality TV stars”.
Real stars
The main star of the show is old Sammyjo Pearson – a young Geordie entrepreneur. She has built up her hair extension empire from scratch and the programme follows the lives of her team of female stylists. The new series also follows young entrepreneur Shane Guttridge who owns tattoo parlour Pure Ink 3. Shane wants to change how people perceive tattoo shops and is modernising the industry with his fresh outlook.
Tonight Sammyjo and Shane will be taking over as continuity announcers on BBC Three and the new third series will also be screened as part of an all Angels of the North night on the channel. I got the opportunity to catch up with both Sammyjo and Shane about this.
A boost to the North East
They both feel this ‘take over’ of BBC Three tonight will be a great boost for our area – North East voices all night on there! Shane described how they had great fun doing the voiceovers and laughed so much.
Sammyjo said:
“I am really looking forward to seeing which voiceovers they have picked in the end to be aired. We made so many bloopers in the process”.
Shane said he had already had viewers recognising him from the online showing. He added “one had asked him personally if he could do their tattoo” such is his following. I told him I think he will be recognised even more in the street once this series has been aired on BBC Three. Sammyjo being in it from the start already gets such attention and described how an 80 year old fan tapped her on the shoulder at a bar in Newcastle recently to tell her how much he loved the show. Sammyjo feels “that the show appeals to all age groups”.
They are both looking forward to switching on tonight themselves. Shane says he will be getting a takeaway in for the occasion and Sammyjo will be watching with family. I am really looking forward to it myself too! Watch Angels of the North Take over on BBC 3 tonight from 7.30pm to 11.30pm.
BBC Three can be watched on Sky 117 or 173, Freesat 107, Freeview 109 and Virgin 107
