Teesside’s ailing international airport received another blow on 3 June 2026, as European Cargo Ltd went into administration.
Freight operator
The airline was one of only two freight operators at the airport. It operated five weekly long-haul cargo flights from Teesside to Ürümqi Tianshan International Airport in China. Staff at European Cargo Ltd’s Bournemouth Airport base were notified of their redundancies via a Teams call on 3 June 2026. Presumably, Teesside Airport staff also took part in this call.
Halcyon days
It seems like only months ago that Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen was posing on the tarmac at Teesside Airport, boasting of European Cargo’s new freight operation to China. Oh, wait, it WAS only months ago: 17 March 2026, to be precise.
Bad timing
European Cargo Ltd’s Teesside launch came only 17 days after the start of the Iran War, and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The price of aviation fuel in the intervening three months has fluctuated wildly, but it’s roughly doubled in price since the end of February. A round trip between Teesside and Ürümqi is 7,600 miles. That’s a lot of aviation fuel, and European Cargo Ltd’s business model won’t have been built to cope with the price shock.
About the company
European Cargo Ltd began operations in 2020, delivering PPE from Malaysia during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. The company was acquired by Priority 1 Logistics Holdings LLC in 2022. This company is a subsidiary of US-based Priority Holdings LLC.
Airbus fleet
European Cargo Ltd’s fleet of nine Airbus A340-600 aircraft are leased from Priority 1 Leasing, based at Shannon Airport in Ireland. The company accounts confirm that a charge is held by Priority 1 Leasing Limited on these aircraft. Stuart Morris, Robert Fishman, and David Soden of Teneo Financial Advisory Limited, were appointed Joint Administrators of European Cargo Ltd. The charge that is held on the aircraft held by Priority 1 Leasing Ltd will complicate efforts by the administrators to recover any assets belonging to European Cargo Ltd.
Freight operations at Teesside Airport
Teesside Airport handled a record amount of freight, 769 tonnes, in March 2026, the latest month for which statistics are available. This was the first month in which European Cargo Ltd had started operations. In the month prior to this, the airport only handled 223 tonnes. This was on behalf of FedEx, who will now become the sole freight operator at Teesside Airport. The airport isn’t a major freight player. By comparison, East Midlands Airport handled 35,194 tonnes of freight in March
Passenger operations
On 1 June 2026, KLM reduced its daily flights between Teesside Airport and Amsterdam from three to two. The airport lost its only domestic flights, to and from Aberdeen, in October 2025. Drum roll please
And here is Mayor Lord Ben Houchen continuing to bang the drum for one of the poorest financial decisions that his TVCA has made (let’s not get into Teesworks). With the news of the Redcar bus depot facing closure, the public needs Houchen and his Combined Authority to step up like so many others across the country to provide a functioning bus system. It’s looking like Houchen will be banging that airport drum whilst more bus services fall away.
