A £250 million scheme that could create thousands of jobs at a growing County Durham development site has been unveiled.
The latest plans for the next phase of Integra 61, County Durham, aim to secure 3.2 million square feet of new industrial space.
Citrus Durham’s proposals detail how the latest investment could bring up to 4,500 new jobs during the construction and operational stages, as well as generate up to £170 million of annual economic output for the North East region.
Second Phase
The proposed second phase includes plans for a mix of storage/distribution and manufacturing uses with some ancillary office space, similar to the units on phase one.
It comes after plans were submitted earlier this year for a new petrol station and Starbucks drive-thru at junction 61 of the A1(M) motorway near Bowburn. Costa and Greggs drive-thru units are also located at the Integra 61 site, near the Amazon fulfilment centre. Construction is underway on Marton Care’s new 73-bedroom care home facility alongside 260 new homes.
The new development would also facilitate the delivery of the Bowburn Development Route (relief road), Citrus Durham said.
James Taylor, regional director and group head of planning at Citrus, said: “Integra 61 has proven to be a ground-breaking development for the North East, making a significant contribution to the region’s economy through the creation of thousands of jobs in addition to much-needed new homes, employment space and amenities.
“Due to the success of the first phase, the next logical step is to utilise adjacent land, which has been safeguarded by Durham County Council for employment use, to enable further employment space for businesses to invest and grow in the area.”
The consultation process runs until October 21. A planning application is due to be submitted to Durham County Council in November.
