Five of the world’s top cybersecurity agencies (known as the ‘Five Eyes’) have warned that Britain and other countries will be much more vulnerable to increasingly serious cyber attacks within a matter of months.
The government agencies – from the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA – issued an unprecedented warning that upcoming AI systems will in the very near future “accelerate the speed, scale and sophistication of cyber threats”.
“The timeline is not years. It is months,” the agencies said.
The statement made it clear that new upcoming AI models are likely to make it easier for enemies to launch more rapid and more sophisticated attacks
The implication of the statement is that new much more sophisticated cyber warfare threats are likely to hit not only some Western governmental infrastructure but also business and industry – and market confidence.
The new more advanced AI models lower “barriers for malicious actors and increases the speed and complexity of attacks, shrinking the window between vulnerability discovery and exploitation ever more quickly”.
The warning (issued earlier this week) came just days after the publication of the most comprehensive easily accessible survey of the global threat from AI, ever compiled. It was published as a 5-part series of articles every day last week in North East Bylines.
