Charlotte Windeback, from Gateshead has won the Innovate UK’s Women in Innovation Award which will empower pioneering women across the UK to scale their innovative businesses.

Charlotte is amongst this year’s 50 winners of Innovate UK’s Women in Innovation Awards who are developing novel solutions to major social, environmental and economic challenges. Each winner will benefit from a £50,000 grant, one-to-one business coaching, and a suite of networking, role modelling, and training opportunities.

International Women’s Day

Coinciding with International Women’s Day (Wednesday 8 March), the Awards reflect the government’s ambition to give more support to women innovators and business leaders.

The range of innovations from across the UK are vast, from health tech to education and from protecting lives to new ways to play music. The diverse range of entrepreneurs are recognised today on International Women’s Day which is encouraging people to “embrace equity”.

Charlotte’s work

Charlotte’s work already contributed approximately £16 million in social return on investment for the North East economy reaching learners in some of the most under-resourced communities in the region. She has created safe, peer learning spaces where people can develop enterprise skills and experience.

Commenting on her innovation and Award, Charlotte Windebank of FIRST said:

“The ambition is that enterprise skills and entrepreneurial experiences will become more of a training priority within education and for local governments who are dealing with unemployment, low skill attainment and low start-up business rates. I feel proud, grateful and excited to win this Innovate UK Award. It hasn’t fully sunk in.”

The flagship Women in Innovation Awards is a key part of Innovate UK’s commitment to boosting the number of women entrepreneurs. Innovate UK will give all 50 trailblazers £50,000 and bespoke mentoring and coaching to enable them to scale-up their businesses.

Details on all 50 women innovators can be found here.
