False prophets arise and mislead many
With promises they make but never keep
While people follow without thinking
Like so many lost and lonely sheep

And the wolves stand by ready to strike
They have learnt they can do whatever they like

So many are walking in the deep darkness
So that they can never see the true light
Following blindly step, by step
Until they can no longer tell wrong from right

Being used on every step of the way
By those who have never had to pay

The price for all the trouble they sow
Use people as disposable items
To be thrown out with the rubbish one day
When they are no longer useful to them

While so many in their dark despair
Grasp for something that isn’t there

Yet there are always those who stand tall
Against the strong and powerful tide
Speak out bravely like prophets of old
For the poor and weak on the other side

Like the rock that stands through the wind and rain
When the tide has ebbed, they will remain

Peter Sagar

Peter is a teacher, writer and historian who has also been active in human rights work for 35 years. He is particularly interested in how our great human rights history in the North East can help us to be both inspired and enlightened and enable us to face up to the challenges we face today. These challenges include defending the human rights of all people in the region and the country and dealing with the existential crisis that is climate change
