We were promised the transformation of the Utilita Arena into “a breathtaking world of colour, light and sound”, and this was largely achieved. The first gallery space, however, was somewhat anti-climactic, with a seemingly interminable number of small, (by comparison) photos of Van Gogh’s work, each covered in text describing it. These would have been far better placed -offering more inclination to study them – after the main gallery, which was indeed truly spectacular.
The internationally acclaimed exhibition in this 10,000 sq ft immersive space shows, in sequence, more than 300 of Van Gogh’s masterpieces, brought to life through cutting-edge projection technology, music, and allegedly storytelling – although I didn’t hear any of the latter.
It was indeed wonderful to step inside some of the artist’s most celebrated works, including The Starry Night, Sunflowers, and Café Terrace at Night, as they come alive around you.
On the press and VIP night we were treated to a lovely rendition by a female vocalist of Don McLean’s ‘Vincent’ in the foyer beforehand. I doubt this will be available generally, but it was a very nice touch. The preview was very crowded, which somewhat diminished the quality of the experience – as did the idiots who stood directly in front of the massive screens instead of in the middle of the gallery like those possessing more self-awareness. I would recommend going at an off-peak time to enjoy this amazing exhibition to the max. I was sufficiently impressed to say that I will probably go again and this time pay for my ticket, though I’ll probably skip the yoga opportunity!
