Feet are tapping from the opening bars, by the finale the audience is dancing in the aisles. Based on the now iconic 1980 film, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, the live on-stage band lifts the soundtrack which drives the action from start to finish.
9 to 5 is a light-hearted and upbeat musical comedy showing how ordinary people can empower themselves and work together to bring about meaningful change.
The story follows three women, Violet, Judy and Doralee (Jade Marvin, Kayla Carter and Karla Tracey), working in a demanding office environment where they are undervalued and poorly treated by their misogynistic and self-serving manager, Franklin Hart Jnr (Tim Rogers). Joining forces, the women challenge unfair workplace practices and with a bit of determination, creativity and humour transform the office into a positive and productive place to work.
The full-cast musical numbers were a particular highlight of the production, with well-choreographed ensemble dance routines executed with impressive timing. Tracey gave a strong and convincing performance as Doralee, bringing warmth, confidence and charisma to the role. However, the moments that most delighted the audience were the scenes shared by renowned musical theatre actress Jessica Martin, as the uptight officer manager Roz and her unrequited love for Rogers as the odious boss; their comic timing generated the biggest laughs of the evening.
Directed by Paul Jepson, this current production from Landmark Theatre plays at Darlington Hippodrome until 8 August before continuing on a national tour – details here.
