“You wanna watch yourself, lad. We’re not all friendly up North”

Hangmen by Martin McDonagh is a savagely comic exploration of justice and punishment that will have you laughing out loud, simultaneously shocked and delighted.

This taut theatrical thriller debuted at the Royal Court Theatre in London before transferring to Broadway. It was called “corrosively funny” by Variety, “a flawless treat” by The Independent, and it was awarded the 2016 Olivier Award for Best New Play.

Hangmen

What does the second-best hangman in England do on the day Parliament abolish hanging?

In his small Oldham pub, ex executioner Harry Wade (Ian Willis, link below to images) holds court, surrounded by a motley crew of hangers-on all seeking his reaction to the news.

When a mysterious stranger turns up, a series of twists and turns are set in motion leading to an astonishing climax.

“The electric bloody chair! I’m told when that goes wrong they come out sizzling like a bloody steak.”

Listings information

The play will be available from Tuesday 4 – Saturday 8 March 2025 at People’s Theatre, Stephenson Road, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Tickets for Hangmen are available from the People’s Theatre Box Office on 0191 265 5020 and online at the theatres website available here.
