Find me an almond tree

Almond tree branch.

Almond tree branch.

after David the Dendrite

Tired of the world and felled by whelm,
he packed thick socks and a flask of tea
and planted himself in an almond tree;
three orbits he spent in his rooted realm,
braving atrophied limbs against nature’s whims,
prey to twitchers, TikTok kids, the BBC,
all the unseeing who thought they could see,
as each branch became one with the bark of his skin.
But then, an angel: ‘Enough! You’re free!
Well done, but now the world needs thee.’
So down he climbed. No podcast circuit,
no book, no fame, no blogging – but
a better return, for now I see:
it’s time to go find me my almond tree.
