Today, 27 January is the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and is Holocaust Memorial Day.

How could they dream of a better future
drinking the watery soup,
behind the ghetto wall

How could they see a better future
through the bitter tears
through the dark trees at Auschwitz,
through the smoke of the crematoria

But a better future did come
The monster was slain
and peace came to the land
while signatures in San Francisco
proclaimed the rights of all
and everyone said never again….

How can we dream of a better future today,
knowing of Rwanda and Bosnia and Cambodia
listening to lies from the powerful,
reading of vicious hatred all around us

How can we see a better future today
when we see the child in the ruins crying
when we see the powerful smirking
when we see so many apathetic faces

We must hope for a better future
imagine one to make it happen
we must learn the bitter lessons
of our own broken history
The ghosts from the camps and the pits
are demanding that we do better this time

Peter is a teacher, writer and historian who has also been active in human rights work for 35 years. He is particularly interested in how our great human rights history in the North East can help us to be both inspired and enlightened and enable us to face up to the challenges we face today. These challenges include defending the human rights of all people in the region and the country and dealing with the existential crisis that is climate change
