Lessons from history

        Hopefully, 'We will meet again.'
	Family, friends and lovers' restrain
	emotional farewells to their men,
	silently savouring moments that remain
	while tremulous crowds boarded the train.

	Bombastic camaraderie concealed emotion
	anxious anticipation, regretting lost chances
	as soldiers set off blithely to the front,
         feeling lulled by the train's constant motion
         trying to forget their exuberant dances.

	History records the awful price war pays:
	insecurity, fearing the country may fall,
	impacting lives in many different ways.
	Those who served reluctant to recall
	moving on, trying to forget those days.

	Bells rang, crowds gathered, celebrating peace
	different feelings, excited smiling faces,
	but tears for those unable to join the feast.	
	Talking, eating, drinking, the day races
	enjoying tremendous relief, emotional release.

	Sadly seeing the impact of war's destructive hand
	immense suffering, hardship for so many. 
	New tensions emerge, overt and underhand,
	threatening stability throughout our land
	while we strive for peace and harmony.
