It is the very darkest time When night dominates day When the sky always seems to be
A permanent shade of grey

All seems to be closing in
Sadness and tension are high
And storm clouds on the horizon
Are not only those in the sky

Just as the walls of a stable
And the rule of cruel empire
Closed in all those years ago
On a young family in a byre

Then it was time for light
To shine through the darkness and gloom
Even in a lowly stable
Even when there was no room

Today there are those in stables
Who have no other place to stay
They desperately need the light of hope
To illuminate their way

Across the world the light goes out
Nothing seems for the best
But lighting a candle is still better
Than simply cursing the darkness

Now is the time for real courage
To stand so tall and strong
Now is the time to make it clear
The difference between right and wrong

So, at this time remember the family
And their baby in the manger
And remember all those whose lives are blighted
By pain and sorrow and danger

Peter is a teacher, writer and historian who has also been active in human rights work for 35 years. He is particularly interested in how our great human rights history in the North East can help us to be both inspired and enlightened and enable us to face up to the challenges we face today. These challenges include defending the human rights of all people in the region and the country and dealing with the existential crisis that is climate change
