Time was when a rumour however false or fake
Could leave you drowned in a river or burnt at the stake
Now we see dark and dangerous misinformation
Spreading like wildfire across a broken nation
Within the blink of a sly, winking eye
While in lonely rooms the innocent cry
When will we learn to follow the truth?
And value evidence and solid proof?
The misleaders tell lies to me and to you
Just like Joseph Goebbels used to do
And people can be so easily deceived
When they only believe what they want to believe
Blaming innocents for all their trouble and sorrow
With no thoughts of consequences come tomorrow
Picking on those who have no voice
Who fate has left without any choice

Peter Sagar

Peter is a teacher, writer and historian who has also been active in human rights work for 35 years. He is particularly interested in how our great human rights history in the North East can help us to be both inspired and enlightened and enable us to face up to the challenges we face today. These challenges include defending the human rights of all people in the region and the country and dealing with the existential crisis that is climate change
