Haven’t we come such a long way
From the dusty fields of Africa? Shall we continue on the same road now
Or have we already come too far?

When Adam bit the apple at Los Alamos
the lid could not be replaced
the deadly genie floats above us all
but comes down to laugh in our face

Shall we carry on with business as usual
Pushing our luck again and again
Only to see our hopes washed away
In the wild wind and the rain?

When we finally come to our senses
will there be anything left to save?
Or just poisoned seas and toxic land
With the world in its lonely grave

Or shall we think again more carefully
of who we are and just what we do
Strive again to be our better selves
and for what is beautiful and true

Look at the world around us afresh
With more discerning eyes
Spend less time trying to be so clever
And more time trying to be wise

Peter is a teacher, writer and historian who has also been active in human rights work for 35 years. He is particularly interested in how our great human rights history in the North East can help us to be both inspired and enlightened and enable us to face up to the challenges we face today. These challenges include defending the human rights of all people in the region and the country and dealing with the existential crisis that is climate change
