The powerful pitman’s parliament
As grand as the Palace of Westminster
A place where words stood tall and proud
and were not used to hide the truth

A place where the New Jerusalem
could now be directly discussed
With such grand talk of justice and hope,
And of invention and ingenuity

A home for the great driving force
of the people’s work and lives
A friend to the hewer and the banksman
And to the lonely orphan and widow

Now with eyes firmly facing the future,
recalling community and innovation
A place to nurture a just transition
for people who have waited so long

In an energy producing region
that can again stand tall and proud
With a people who are no longer stooped
Whose heads are no longer bowed

For after every farewell sunset
So the sun must rise again
And hills of hope will glow crimson red,
with the promise of a new dawn.

Peter is a teacher, writer and historian who has also been active in human rights work for 35 years. He is particularly interested in how our great human rights history in the North East can help us to be both inspired and enlightened and enable us to face up to the challenges we face today. These challenges include defending the human rights of all people in the region and the country and dealing with the existential crisis that is climate change
