All city residents want to live in a clean, well-kept neighbourhood that is a pleasure to spend time in. Newcastle’s Neighbourhood Services Teams work hard emptying bins in all weathers and sweeping the streets collecting 110,774 tonnes of household waste and processing 20,000 tonnes of recycling every year.
Yet alongside other core services this has been reduced over the past decade as the council has had to find savings due to central government funding cuts.
Residents both in Kenton and across our city have told us to find a way to take care of neighbourhoods.
That’s why an extra £1.2m has been invested in neighbourhood services. So far, this investment has been used to employ an additional 20 staff and buy more vehicles. This has allowed the council to carry out extra street and neighbourhood cleaning, expand fence and barrier strimming and shrub maintenance.
Getting the basics right is a key priority for both Kenton residents and elected members.
