Integrity clearly doesn’t matter: Zahawi breaches ministerial code

"The reason this keeps happening is we have a government whose only principle is party first, country second." Bridget Phillipson

I think the entire nation will be shocked by the scale of breaches of the ministerial code as revealed by the report into Nadhim Zahawi released this morning and reported in the Independent. For many, it been obvious for some time that something wasn’t adding up and we have to thank the fearless journalism by the Independent that has resulted in the sacking of the Chairman of the Tory party.

It’s beyond comprehension that it has taken a newspaper to reveal a story like this and yet no one in government seemed to raise any red flags. We must remember that the Independent received legal letters to prevent it from revealing information about his tax affairs. We should also note that Zahawi alleged on Sky News with Kay Burley that he was being smeared over his tax affairs during 2022.

It’s vital to our nation that our democracy is open, honest and has principles and integrity at its heart. It’s very clear these are principles often absent from our current government. As we have reported earlier there are other ministers and former ministers under investigation

Labour response

The Labour party claims there seems to be a pattern of sleaze associated with the current government which now looks battered tired desperate and out of ideas.

Speaking on the BBC moments after the news of the sacking was announced, Labour’s shadow education secretary Bridget Phillipson, said Zahawi should have been sacked “a long time ago” but the prime minister was “too weak to act”.

“The reason this keeps happening is we have a government whose only principle is party first, country second.”

Just go quickly

In my opinion, it’s time for the Tories to go and to go quickly. I fear that over the coming months more sacking or resignations will arise and a crisis of confidence will envelope the Tory party. This really matters as we grapple with a massive cost of living crisis, high inflation, high-interest rates, and low growth, and the continued serious problems that Brexit is causing to our economy and the entire nation.

The Tories are lunging from one crisis to another so I call on the Prime Minister to go now, call a general election and give the electorate an opportunity to express their views on this tired inept out of touch political party.

It is time to get the Tories out.

We deserve a better government and we demand it now.
