Firstly, well done to Peter Morris and North East Bylines for writing and publishing this review – the only journal or newspaper review that I have found.
I am a retired GP and climate activist. I have found out from enquiry over the years that in most disciplines people have become specialists in some small aspect of the whole, and this is certainly true about economics / the economy. Hence the ease with which the economy is manipulated, which then changes the dynamics of the whole system.
Economics and the economy is not a sacred academic discipline that can only be defined and understood by experts. It has been designed in a colonialist, exploitative setting – exploitative of both nature and peoples. It fulfills these purposes excellently. ‘The economy’ has become an oppressive and destructive behemoth.
Therefore, Molly Scott Cato is right that we don’t need to understand how it works in order to change it. In fact, we can’t understand its complexities. What we do need is a collective vision of how we do want the economy to work, how it may serve us nationally and internationally, and then work to make that happen.
I understand that this comment comes a few weeks after the article was published. However, as the review is the only one I found, I think it is important to publish this caveat.
