Midsommar Bakery celebrates its grand opening in Newcastle’s iconic Grainger Market, on Saturday 29 November, and everyone is invited to join for coffee, cake and a well deserved break. A tasty addition to the city, and the region, Midsommar promises Scandinavian-inspired baking and a cosy café welcome.
The owners aim to introduce fika to the North East – a cherished Swedish custom of enjoying coffee, cake, and a proper break from the chaos and craziness of the day. With sweet baked delights and savoury smörgås – open sandwiches with a slice of fresh-baked bread, butter, and delicious toppings – Midsommar plans to become a popular hangout for foodies and cafe connoisseurs alike.
Rooted in Nordic flavours, the bakery specialises in small-batch, high-quality products baked on-site daily, offering an inviting space for customers to pause, enjoy, and indulge.

Midsommar Bakery was founded by baker and musician Nathalie Stern, born and raised in Västerås, Sweden, and Ben Dickenson, a Newcastle native and creative entrepreneur. What began as a side-hustle grew into a local market favourite, regularly selling out at pop-ups and becoming a supplier to cafés across the city. Growing demand and local support inspired the couple to open their first permanent shop in Grainger Market, and they couldn’t be happier:
“We’re excited to bring a piece of Swedish soul to Geordie hearts! Midsommar Bakery is all about warmth, community, and good quality bakes. We can’t wait to welcome Newcastle in for some good ol’-fashioned fika!”, the couple said, as they prepared for a Grand Opening on 29 November.
