Being a big fan of McDonald’s, I discovered their new Christmas menu was one that I could not resist trying. My collection of McDonald’s place mats includes some from around the world on my travels. Though you might be far away from home, it does not matter where you are as the arches of the big yellow ‘M’ welcome you to a familiar place.
Although the core menu remains the same, there are plenty of regional variations. France for example, seems to favour burgers that pander to the French obsession with cheese; Germany has the McRib that caters for the German preference for pork; whilst Holland was one of the first countries to offer the vegetable burger.
The new Christmas menu is themed around The Grinch, the character created by Dr Seuss and the book ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas.’ Where he hates Christmas profusely, before discovering that the occasion is not all about feasting and giving presents as he becomes a reformed character; much like Scrooge in Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol.’
A new menu has plenty to sing about
The Grinched Menu contains some new items along with some old ones that have been re-imagined. It includes the Grinch Big Mac Meal, which is the standard Big Mac and Fries with the addition of Grinch salt in a sachet of gherkin flavoured seasoning, and a pair of Grinch socks that are given away with your meal. The Grinched Menu also has options of nine chicken McNuggets, and the Grinch McPlant Meal.
The much loved Big Tasty is back. The burger hasn’t been changed, and still has the iconic smoky Big Tasty sauce that makes the burger such a tempting proposition. You can choose between a single or double beef patty with the addition of a bacon add-on.
The Cheesy Chicken Stack is seriously cheesy, maybe more attuned to the French market than here; if you like a strong cheddar taste you will not be disappointed. It comes with a Chipotle Salsa which seems at odds with the chicken breast fillet; the two, I thought, didn’t really go together that well.
Staying on the cheesy side, the Cheese Melt Dippers are back and served with a rich tomato dip; they are also available as a ‘Sharebox.’ I found them to be very more-ish and you could end up eating the whole box yourself.
The Frozen Grinch Lemonade is made up of a very zesty lemonade mixed with a flavoured syrup – this might make you wince slightly with the taste. I reckon it would be good for nursing a hangover after a Christmas party night out …
Living the sweet life
For anyone with a sweet tooth there is the Grumble Pie, which as you might have guessed comes in a green pastry filled with apple, cranberries, and custard. I found this to be very sweet; however, the three components work well together with each flavour complementing the other.
The McFlurry is re-born here with two new combinations. The Mischief McFlurry which is topped with Smarties, in you guessed it – red and green. A rich and very sweet strawberry sauce adds to the calorie count. The Chocolate Brownie McFlurry brings brownie cookie pieces and a drizzle of chocolate sauce for seasonal indulgence.
The new menu has something for everyone, though I wasn’t too sure about the Gherkin flavoured seasoning. I am one of those who takes out the gherkin from my burger as I am not too keen on the taste. Apart from that there is nothing to grumble about here, even the Grinch wouldn’t have anything to complain about!
