On these cold autumn nights we all need something to keep us warm and also a treat to look forward to. It has been a while since I visited Pizza Express and when I did it was always to use some unused Tesco Clubcard vouchers that seem to accumulate a lot slower than they used to.

With a new autumn menu recently launched it seemed as good a time as any to pay a visit to Pizza Express. I always find it intriguing what Ingredients they will add next to a pizza. We once arrived in Italy by plane late one night, hungry and waning – upon discovering the local pizzeria found that they specialised in mushroom pizzas – with at least nineteen varieties!

Thankfully Pizza Express has kept the mushroom options slightly lower so you do not have to make too much of a big decision on what to order – if you like mushrooms that is!

Starters

For starters you could try the new Mushroom Arancini; golden balls of risotto rice, filled with mushrooms and melting mozzarella with a crispy breadcrumb coating, priced at £6.95 they were ideal for sharing.

I tried the new Dynamite Dough Balls. Can you handle the heat? For myself they were a little too hot and I would advise having iced water on the side to cool you down. I liked the fluffy dough balls but the zingy herby Chimichurri sauce was, how shall I say, on the flaming side of hot. Priced at £6.35 they are again, ideal for sharing.

Pizzas

New on the pizza front is the Spicy Giuseppe. You might have tried the famous Sloppy Giuseppe before, the spicy version is a new take on the Pizza Express classic. After having the Dynamite Dough Balls first and then the Spicy Giuseppe afterwards set my taste buds on a mission to somewhere hotter than hell, though ultimately if you ate a pizza fan and hot tastes you will be in heaven with this new offering.

Tender, spiced ground beef, fresh chillies, red onion, green pepper, tomato and mozzarella, finished with chilli oil and parsley all added up to a spicy pizza, priced at £14.95.

For mushroom fans then the new Funghi di Bosco  might appeal to you. Chestnut mushrooms, tomato with garlic, mozzarella and rosemary finished with parsley and Gran Milano cheese. Priced at £13.95 this also in late discretionary 25p to the Veneziana fund.

The Veneziana Fund has successfully supported many restoration works in Venice while in the UK it has funded heritage projects focusing on the preservation, restoration, repair and maintenance of buildings originally constructed before 1750 and works of art made before 1750.

Dessert

If you have room for dessert then you might be tempted with the new Billionaire’s Truffle Sundae, there are probably a billion reasons to try this guilty pleasure. After all the flaming hot food you will certainly need something to cool you down!

Luxurious and decadent for £6.75 you will be cooled down with Salted caramel and vanilla gelato, layered with salted caramel and chocolate sauce, crushed Lotus biscuit – all topped with whipped cream and a Lindor salted caramel truffle. Mind you, at 604 calories you might want to go on a diet the next day!

With restaurants throughout the North East there are enough opportunities to treat yourself or a loved one to the new autumn menu – hot stuff indeed.
