As the nights draw in, the leaves drop from the trees and summer seems a distant memory, the indulgence of comfort food becomes a guilty pleasure and a good reason to visit Pizza Express.

The pizza franchise has just launched their new autumn menu with the emphasis on heart warming meals, many with a hot twist.

Hot dough balls

The new American hot dough balls (from £6.95), I found hotter than the peppers in Nonna’s Kitchen – loaded with rich Italian tomato sauce and paprika-spiced sausage, topped with hot green peppers and flavourful Gran Milano cheese – a taste explosion that brings two of the brand’s most popular menu items together for the very first time.

Spicy chicken wings

Another new arrival is the spicy chicken wings (from £8.25), a fiery burst of chilli seasoning served with a chilli and basil dip. This new starter is quite pricey so maybe good to share with your dining partner.

Other new dishes

Other new dishes include mozzarella sticks, anchovy bruschetta, Bruno Romana, Margherita Pomodoro, Pesto Romana, Caprese Salad, Mac and Cheese, Al Forno Spicy Pollo and Chorizo and Al Forno Chicken Parmigiana.

Inspired by the tastes of Italian-America and for the meat-lover, the brand has launched its new meatball Italiano Romana pizza (from £16.75) – a delicious combination of flavoursome beef meatballs, spicy beef, tomato, garlic, mozzarella and red onion, finished with a dash of chilli oil and gran Milano cheese on a crispy Romana base. I found the combination of all the ingredients a little on the greasy side though very filling and tasty.

Desserts

The autumn menu will also see the arrival of an irresistible ultimate chocolate fudge cake (from £9.45) which is inspired by the brand’s iconic black and white striped t-shirts.

The new dessert combines six indulgent layers of chocolate sponge with heavenly buttercream and rich, dark chocolate fudge icing. One slice, and you’ll be hooked, but maybe not so on the content of the 610 calories! I found the dessert to be very moreish and very sweet.

My dining partner tried the natural autumn classic, though not something you would get in a pizza restaurant in Italy – sticky toffee pudding (from £7.45) a decadent date pudding that came served with lashings of sticky toffee sauce, again a good idea might be to share and cut down the price and the calories!

A good idea is to join the PizzaExpress Club, providing rewards every time customers dine, from dough balls at Bronze tier to free children’s meals and more at Gold tier. Members also can order the all day set menu with three courses costing £26.95.
