Kitchen wizard Rosalind Waugh’s popular Blueberry Pinot Noir & Liquorice Jam was named best sweet preserve in this year’s ‘Deliciously Yorkshire’ awards.

The jam, already winner of a Great Taste award, was praised by judges as ‘a grown-up preserve that exudes quality and class,’ and as ‘a stunner.’

Background in health science

Building on her success, the founder of Rosalind’s Larder is now passing on her culinary skills to eager learners in the state-of-the-art training kitchen at Middlesbrough’s Live Well Centre.

Drawing inspiration from her Italian heritage and love of home cooking, the retired NHS consultant radiographer started out making biscuits and preserves, often sourcing fresh produce from the allotment she tends with husband Alan. To date, Rosalind’s bulging trophy cabinet includes a dozen Great Taste awards, Great British Food Awards, Dalemain Marmalade awards and a hat-trick of ‘Deliciously Yorkshire’ awards.

Cooking for health classes at Live Well in Middlesbrough

In her current classes at the Live Well, Rosalind is teaching small groups of eager home cooks to make baklava, with Turkish dishes and fermented foods a speciality.

Rosalind commented:

“The facilities at the Live Well Centre are fantastic, and it’s a great place to learn the sort of skills that will stand you in good stead for years to come.

“The classes are great fun, and it’s a joy to be able to pass on some of the knowledge and skills I’ve picked up along the way, and in turn my students go on to surprise and delight their family and friends.

“In time I’d love to be able to offer classes to younger people or those who live on their own and don’t know how to cook good, healthy food that is different to the usual British fare.

“I’d also like to develop classes in fermented food – it’s delicious, good for gut health and uses up fresh fruit and vegetables which helps to reduce food waste.”
