48-year-old Nicky Francis, who works at Middlesbrough’s Neptune Centre, took on the notoriously hilly road marathon in a pink tutu in aid of Breast Cancer Now. Inspired by two friends recently affected by the disease, Nicky raised more than £700 for the corporate charity partner, Everyone Active which operates the leisure centre in partnership with Middlesbrough Council.
Nicky said: “I really wanted to do something for the charity as I currently have a friend undergoing treatment for breast cancer and another in remission.”
“I also lost my father and two brothers to cancer. I know how much the money raised for cancer charities helps support others.” she added.
The Loch Ness Marathon
The marathon, taking place during late September every year as one of multiple events in Baxters festivals of running encourages its participants to get sponsored and donate to charities.
“The Loch Ness Marathon is a great race.” Francis said.
“It’s quite remote in places but the local people are very supportive and really got behind the outfit I was wearing.”
The race
Francis also recounts some of her experiences during the race.
“During the marathon, another runner ran up and commented what a great cause I was running for. He sadly lost his wife to breast cancer, which was quite poignant and we shared a few miles together.
“I’m amazed with how much I’ve raised – you don’t want to keep going to people and asking for sponsorship – the amount sort of organically grew and I’d like to thank everyone who sponsored me for the event along with my colleagues at Neptune for their support in the run up to the marathon.”
