The sun shone bright and thrust down a temperature of 16 degrees onto a coastal town and no doubt many others across the country. After what seemed like the most depressing winter for an age, there came spring to restore joy to the world. Joy through travel, joy through walking and joy through hiking.

The seasons

Thursday 6 March saw the first proper warm and sunny day of the year in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Birds sang and flew, flowers emerged and the bees went about their pollinating business.

After a rubbish winter which alternated between wet and miserable and frosty and freezing, this was more than welcome.  But it’s not just the season for the flora and fauna to re-emerge. It’s time for hardened hikers and wandering walkers to also step out of the shadows.

What’s on offer?

Waves crashing against beaches, the breeze blowing through trees and hares and deer leaping through fields. The fields and hills roll with vibrant colours and stunning scenery. Amidst it all stand ferocious forests surrounded in mystery; holding tantalising secrets within. The flora and fauna inside are a universe unto themselves and humanity can only but observe its unique splendour.

But go beyond these life-givers that provide the air we all breath and you will find the perfect, picturesque English village. An old, thatched pub, an aged, stone church and the greenest village green you could possibly imagine. Ancient ruins and eroded coastlines, take it all in; the history, the beauty and the wonder.

What to do

Drag your boots and backpacks out of your cupboard and get your gear together. Get your maps and plan your routes. For beyond you, across England and beyond, a world of pure wonder is waiting for you.

Don’t let this pass you by. We only get a fleeting amount of time on this earth so use it, use it to the best of your abilities. The season of continued sunshine and warmth is coming so take every opportunity to see the world on your doorstep. Hike those hills and walk those paths because your chance is only so long and the worst of winter is already on its way back. So gather your belongings and head out into England’s wonderful countryside. The seasons are turning and the dryer, warmer weather has come. Take advantage, make the most of it and get hiking, walking and travelling!

James Jobson

I am a 26-year-old writer from Berwick-upon-Tweed, the most north-easterly town in the North East of England. I have spent my whole life on the English/Scottish border and become greatly fascinated in the history, culture and politics of England, Scotland and the UK. I am passionate about travel and discovering new places and writing about my experiences alongside current affairs, history, culture and reviews. I believe the written word is vital to our future and that we must take every opportunity to preserve and appreciate it.
