Ditch the US and embrace the EU

Trump’s administration makes closer ties with the EU all the more urgent

“Ditch the socialist EU and embrace a trade deal with the US instead, or face tariffs.” Those were words lifted from the Independent, words by Stephen Moore, a senior economic advisor to Donald Trump. Words threatening Britain should we do trade deals with our European allies. Words that show that the new American administration will be a big problem for Britain and words that ultimately demonstrate that the UK’s membership of the European Union or at the very least the Single Market is a matter of utmost urgency.

A Trump presidency

Apart from Nigel Farage and his Reform followers, appetite in the UK for Donald Trump becoming the 47th President of the United States is not great. There are those who vehemently oppose him, those who disapprove and those who don’t care what happens in another country that lies over 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. But a Trump presidency is really not a good thing, no matter how much you may want to push it out of your mind.

A wall to stop immigration, a Muslim ban and refusing to accept democratic election results and being a convicted criminal are only some reasons why this election result is bad. But, for Britain, we need to worry about our relationship with America. Especially when it comes to trade, given the new Trump Republican regime feels it can bully and threaten Britain; forcing us to give up on our European friends under the threat of what are essentially sanctions by the US.

A matter of urgency

This is why we need the European Union now more than ever. Let’s forget the division and debate of the last referendum and focus on the here and now. We were protected from Donald Trump’s ambitions during his first presidency thanks to our membership of the EU but we no longer have them to shield us. We are left open and exposed.

The Trump administration’s threats and attempts of bullying and intimidation are themselves attempts to undermine our national sovereignty. Sovereignty that was not being undermined by the EU but is by the USA. The irony would be funny if it wasn’t horrifying. Donald Trump wants to pull the strings and make Britain dance like his sad, little marionette puppet. I for one take exception to that. Call me old fashioned or new age but I don’t like the idea of my country being the 51st state of America.

There is a solution, however, one the British parties need to brave up and accept. We need to rejoin the European Union. The Single Market at the very least. This is the only way to protect Britain and its economy from disastrous politic decisions made by a president who carries a criminal record. Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves keep saying they want to fix the foundations and need to make to tough choices; well, here is a choice for you now. You can either fix those foundations and rebuild the bridges of our trade by taking us back to the EU and the Single Market or you can throw our future, our economy and our sovereignty to the wind and dance to Donald Trump’s tune.

The dangers of Trump’s America lies before us, Stephen Moore made that clear. The solution also lies before us, across the English Channel and North Sea. Instead of ditching the ‘socialist’ EU, Prime Minister, make the right choice and ditch the unpredictable and dangerous USA under Trump and embrace the European Union to build a better future for Britain.
