New net migration figures show that levels are now four times higher than pre-Brexit figures in 2019. In the year to June 2023, numbers rose to more than 900,000.
Mark English, Head of Policy, European Movement UK, said:
“Net migration is now four times higher than it was before Brexit. The vote to take back control was based on a double fantasy. The fantasy that Brexit would slash immigration. And the fantasy that the UK can do without a certain level of immigration.
“Immigration tends to fluctuate according to labour market needs and according to how many students – bringing money into the UK economy – want to come in and how many we want to come in. What is clear is that Brexit has made it harder for employers – especially the NHS – to get the workers they need rapidly and without red tape. And that British people have lost the right to live, study and work and retire in 30 other European countries.”
European Movement UK was formed in 1949 by Sir Winston Churchill, to prevent further conflict between European countries. It remains a cross-party organisation campaigning on the benefits of close ties between the UK and EU.
