Incitement to hatred and violence, the sort of emotions that resulted in Joe Cox’s murder, is deepening powered by investment in technology. More and more dark money feeds right wing campaigns. Fake news becomes reality.
Farage’s infamous ‘Breaking point’ poster which showed a long queue of largely non-white people was designed to frighten the electorate to convince them that Britain was being overwhelmed by immigration.
The photo showed refugees fleeing crisis near the Croatia-Slovenia border who were not arriving in the UK. Their image was used as a political weapon in the final days of the Brexit referendum. Farage was well aware of European laws on immigration which helped or could help the UK control its borders.
Leaving the EU did not reduce immigration, net migration rose dramatically.
There are no wins in Brexit; it did not help the NHS and we as a nation are more economically challenged.
Technology can create a parallel universe.
Baroness Lawrence wrote in the run up to the referendum that Europe was not an elite conspiracy against the public in contrast to the leave campaign who pitched the debate as being about the people against the establishment.
Lawrence argued EU laws and judgements acted as another level of safety and scrutiny to protect the public from any rogue governments which might reduce our (human) rights in future. It was not unfair foreign interference.
The irony as Britain heads towards a Reform government in 2029 if the polls read true, is that the government will be empowered and influenced by foreign influence. This is not guided by principles of justice and human rights, but desire for control, profit and deregulation which frees the rich from EU taxes and controls which seek to curb unfair practices from businesses.
And the longer Labour goes on their quest to keep Britain outside the single market, the fewer resources they have to make real changes to further improve the lives of those who need it most. Brexit not only dented the economy, it left an ongoing decline in compassion and humanity. Poverty helped Hitler rise to power. Britain must forge closer ties with Europe again. The EU was founded as a peace project in the wake of World War II. Those foundations were partly British made.
