On 18 September, the residents of Muriel and Alfred Street in Redcar gathered to celebrate an exciting achievement. Their hard work was officially recognized at the It’s Your Neighbourhood event, part of the Northumbria in Bloom initiative, held at The Fed in Gateshead. Led by local resident Sam Jackson, the community received a prestigious Level 4 Thriving award for their impressive alley transformation. The award was presented by Ross Hutchinson, a weather presenter for ITV News.
Communities coming together
This recognition is a testament to what can be achieved when communities unite with determination and a shared vision. Sam Jackson, along with fellow residents, has not only beautified their alley but has also enhanced the sense of security and sociability along this part of the railway corridor in Coatham, Redcar.
The project, which began in 2015 with support from the local Labour group, is still flourishing today. It demonstrates that long-term community efforts can bring lasting and meaningful change. What makes this award particularly special is that it acknowledges more than just the aesthetic improvements—it highlights the community spirit that has been cultivated.
The residents transformed the alley into a safe, welcoming space where children can play and neighbours can meet, relax, and enjoy the calming atmosphere. Their collective efforts have created a focal point for socializing, setting an example of how grassroots projects can have a profound impact on local quality of life.
