The UK government has expanded its Warm Home Discount Scheme to cover more residents on means-tested benefits. Households receiving Housing Benefit, ESA, Pension Credit and Universal Credit can claim the £150 automatic discount. Six million households will get the discount this winter – an increase of 2.7mn on last year. In Kenton 1,770 residents on Universal Credit will qualify this winter.
The government is urging people who qualify for the discount to check they are named on their energy bills so that this winter’s £150 price cut can be made automatically. The discount is applied by the energy companies rather than sent out to customers.
In England, the energy firms will automatically match people’s eligibility using customer records as of 24 August. It’s not too late to get the discount. You will need to wait for a letter to come in autumn.
Eligible people on prepayment meters, who use a key or top-up, should make sure their household’s account is registered in their name.
Kenton councillors Ged Bell, Paula Mains and Stephen Lambert said:
”If you know someone who might be eligible ,please spread the word to family, friends and neighbours, encouraging them to check they are named on their energy bill.”
‘We believe the discount could a lifeline for vulnerable residents both in Kenton and the city.” added the councillors.
