The Project4Change youth charity has secured £39K for a project called ‘Caring For Kenton’ from the North of Tyne Combined Authority’s Local Community Partnership Fund.

Caring for Kenton: “hidden nature in Kenton’s shared spaces”

The ‘Caring For Kenton’ project, involving 16 young people aged 10 to 25,  will spend up to a year at North Kenton Park exploring and learning about the ”hidden nature in Kenton’s shared spaces”. The charity has teamed up with the Gosforth based Northumberland Wildlife Trust and young people are meeting weekly at The Haven. The youngsters have been actively involved in litter picks and making bird feeders.

The next stage of the project will involve young people working with artist, Josie Brooks, to design environmental posters which will be displayed in North Kenton Park.

Project4Change

Kelly Coates, CEO of Project4Change, said :

”After six months of detached youth work across the Kenton area it became obvious that young people needed to be more included in the decision making of the local area.”

”’The aim of the project is to harness the talents of local young people to make a  real difference to their natural  spaces and environment.”

Protecting urban wildlife

In the next six months the young people will work with expert guests from Northumberland Wildlife Trust, Urban Green and Northumberland Estates making bird boxes, bug and butterfly hotels as well as learning about the dangers of litter dropping for animals, knowing about wildflower sowing for diversity and ”protecting urban wildlife”.

The long-term aim of the one-year environmental project is for more young people from Kenton to care for nature and one another.
