I was prompted to start this petition following statements by both Keir Starmer and Ed Davey before the last election that no one was talking about rejoining the EU, even though polling consistently showed a majority in the country in favour of doing just that.
Further polls on people’s top three concerns facing the country before the election were dominated by topics that were adversely affected by Brexit. However, despite the clear benefits to both the UK and the EU of rejoining, especially in the light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and then of the election of Trump in the USA, Labour has continued to rule out rejoining, refusing to discuss it even as an option.
So the aim of the petition is to get rejoining onto the political agenda and seriously discussed as an option by politicians and the mainstream media.

Why a petition on the parliament website?
Because ultimately the only people who can act to apply to rejoin are our MPs, and petitions on this site are the only ones they are required to respond to. Each petition lasts only six months and only one is permitted on a particular subject at a time, so it avoids ‘petition fatigue’, something many people have complained to me about.
Because it is run by parliament, MPs can have greater confidence in the numbers signing than those on other sites. Petitions on this site are more visible than those on other sites, including a publicly available breakdown of signatures by constituency/region/territory. If large numbers sign, the government will no longer be able to get away with saying no one is talking about it.
A single petition on its own is unlikely to change government policy. It needs to be backed up by local and national campaigning and people writing to their MPs. And we need to keep going until change happens.
