German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is today making his fist official visit to the UK since assuming the role in May. The Chancellor and UK Prime Minister will sign a treaty intended to bring the two countries “closer than ever,” including plans for a new long range missile system and a pledge of mutual military assistance.
Sir Nick Harvey, CEO, European Movement UK, and former Armed Forces Minister, said:
“Today’s security pact with Germany is very welcome. We have had a similar pact with France for 15 years and this opens up a serious leadership opportunity for Europe’s three biggest defence forces – working together with other robust European nations.
“The combined threat of Russian aggression and American indifference has propelled European neighbours into action. Combined with Donald Trump’s sudden and welcome new willingness to supply weapons to Ukraine, this could prove to be a significant turning point.
“Unprecedented moves to boost defence spending in Europe will only reap rewards if there is strong leadership. Bringing the UK and Germany into closer alignment is vital and Chancellor Merz can be a key ally in convincing France to draw Britain into European initiatives.
“Plans to make it easier for German schoolchildren to visit the UK are also welcome as a stepping stone towards an EU-wide agreement on students and young people coming to Britain and vice versa.”
