Residents in North Kenton now have access to a new local pharmacy after a long community campaign led by Kenton councillors. A brand new comprehensive service is now available to local residents at ‘Kenton Pharmacy Clinic’, Halewood Avenue.
The new chemist has now opened its doors, bringing pharmacy provision back to North Kenton after Boots closed the local branch.
Kenton councillors have worked to secure replacement provision ever since the controversial closure was announced by Boots. In December 2023 local councillor Stephen Lambert presented a petition to Newcastle City Council calling for a new pharmacy making sure local people’s concerns were heard.
Working with the city’s Health and Well Being Board and other partners, the councillors continued to push the case for a replacement service. The opening of the new chemist means that residents can once again get prescriptions, medical advice and other important health care services closer to home.
Cllr Ged Bell said: ” This is fantastic news for Kenton and a great result for our community. When the previous pharmacy shut down, residents rightly told us how important it was to have this vital service restored.
”We kept making the case for Kenton and working with partners to get pharmacy provision back into the community. We’re delighted to see the new pharmacy now open and serving local people,” he added.
Fellow councillor Stephen Lambert said: ” I was proud to present residents’ petition to the Council back in 2023 calling for pharmacy provision to be restored in North Kenton.”
He added: ”We knew how hard the closure was, especially for older and vulnerable people who rely on regular prescriptions. We promised residents we would keep fighting for a replacement and it’s good to see that hard work has finally paid off.”
He said: ”Thank you to everyone who backed the campaign and helped ensure that Kenton’s voice was heard.”
The new chemist will provide a convenient local service for residents across North Kenton, Kenton Bar, The Gardens and Montagu, helping improve access to healthcare and making sure people can get the medicines, advice and support they need closer to home.
