The NHS is looking for more organ donors, to help save lives. There are still not enough people on the organ donor register to cover the needs of all those who need a transplant.

It was reported last year that figures published on 12 July 2023 by NHS Blood and Transplant revealed that there had been a 5% increase in the number of patients whose lives were saved or improved through an organ transplant in the UK in 2022/23. However, it was also reported that the number of people on the waiting list for a transplant was significantly higher than the number of patients registering as a donor.

Furthermore, it was noted in December 2022 that more than 6,800 people in the UK were spending the festive season waiting for an organ transplant, and over 220 of these patients are children. It was said that, “these mums, dads, wives, husbands, partners, daughters, sons can only be saved by someone giving them the greatest gift, the gift of life.”

A spokesperson for the NHS was quoted as saying: “At a time of giving, let people know you want to save lives.  Signing up to be an organ donor is quick and easy and makes it easier for families if they know what you want. Give hope to the thousands of people and hundreds of children on the transplant waiting list.”

The NHS is still looking for more people to register as organ donors to help fill the gaps and save lives.
