The head of Ofqual, Sally Collier, has resigned today. This follows the turmoil around the A level and GCSE results this year. Originally A level students were given teacher assessments in place of exams. This was replaced by the use of a controversial algorithm based mainly on two key factors: the student’s prior attainment (in GCSEs or Key Stage 2) and historical data from the school. This was then overturned in a dramatic U turn from the government and grades reverted to those assessed by teachers. Understandably, this has led to quite a lot of confusion and uncertainty for students and parents.
The previous Ofqual regulator, Dame Glenys Stacey will take over on a temporary basis
