The 10,000 Hour Rule was first introduced in 2008, in Malcolm Gladwell’s book “Outliers: The Story of Success”. Since then, this rule has been applied into various fields and is known as one of the crucial elements to achieve mastery. You don’t have to be a genius to learn the 10,000 Hour Rule because it is possible for everyone. So, Let’s delve into this rule to see what’s interesting about it.

How It Works

The rule is very straight forward: choose any field and practice it until you reach a length of 10,000 hours, which is around 7 to 10 years. It may sound simple, but this phase needs to be done straightforwardly with consistency and strong will, without any shortcuts or ‘magical spells’. Make sure you take note of this warning before attempting the 10,000 Hour Rule.

In the beginning, you start the process of doing something as a novice and you totally have no idea about it. However, as you spend time learning and practicing the subject, you start to notice more details of a picture. While you learn, the knowledge slowly becomes embedded in your brain, making it your own. After having understood the fundamentals of the subject in a short time, you will practice them and test them out in your way of thinking with creativity. Therefore, the longer you stick to the process, the better your ability and the deeper you see into the inner layers of the subject. As you get close to the end of the 10,000 hour process, your understanding along with your experience and knowledge you gain are so deep that you can now see the whole picture as well as touch the essence, the core of reality. At this point, you officially become an expert in your chosen field, reaching the point that the majority of people don’t.

The Outcomes

So, having read this line, you are probably thinking of the rewards of such a long phase, right? Well, these are the results of practicing a particular subject for 10,000 hours:

Becoming an expert in a given field

You achieve such a deep level of understanding along with a high level of proficiency that helps you understand and have a grasp of complicated matters. Sometimes, you may even explain these difficult matters into easy – to – digest principles, making it simple for everyone to absorb.

Seeing the world differently

In contrast to others only seeing a partial picture of the subject, you can see the whole picture with complete clarity. You understand how things connect to each other, reveal the invisible patterns and possess a sense of reality.

Reaching the point where others can’t

While everyone is trying to reach the highest point in their given fields, you have already made it with solid effort, discipline and motivation. That is, the height of mastery in reality.

The 10,000 Hour Rule can only be effective if taken seriously. If we don’t truly make self – commitment to the task, mastery will always be a destination that we never reach. The process can be harsh and lengthy, but as soon as you finish the course, you will have attained everything you always dream of. The rewards only come to the ones that truly complete the task with consistency and hard work.
