It was a very wet Wednesday at Westminster. The Prime Minister came out from Number Ten to deliver his general election speech. Rishi Sunak started talking about furlough….and then the music started over a loudspeaker. It took a few moments for it to register, and then there was recognition: “Things can only get better…”.

The music was provided by Steve Bray and Sodem, a group that has protested outside parliament for many years.  Their protest goes back to the Brexit vote.

“Things can only get better”

The song, of course, by D:Ream, was the Labour anthem for the famous 1997 election, when Tony Blair’s Labour won a landslide victory. It will bring back many memories for some. It managed to top Sunak’s words.

The protest by Sodem

Louise Brown, from North East for Europe, and a regular member of the Sodem weekly protests was there, and was delighted with the election announcement, and the effect of the music.

Louise said:

“”Sodem protestors were outside Downing Street listening to the announcement of the GE and we were so happy we started dancing in the rain outside,

“As a north easterner, I am delighted that the general election has been called and I was outside Number Ten to hear it.  Finally, the Tories will be out and levelling up will be in.”
