Local people from Newcastle and the North East are set to return to the streets of the city on Sunday 8 February, as community groups unite for a third year of public demonstrations in support of the Palestinian people.
Since October 2023 members of the public, local community groups, students and activists have gathered regularly in the city centre, with action set to return for a third year. Led by the Newcastle branch of the national Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), the marches and demonstrations have been called to show support for the Palestinian people, provide a space for communities to come together, and call for action from elected representatives to halt violence in the region.
This weekend’s march will begin at Newcastle’s Central Station with anyone who wants to participate invited to gather from 12 noon, before starting the route up to Grey’s Monument, at 12.30pm.
A spokesperson for Newcastle PSC said: “We have tried all methods of engaging with our elected officials over this issue but sadly, after over two years of what has been determined a genocide by several bodies, including the UN, we’re still seeing – at best – pacifying words, and at worst a denial of the atrocities so many of us have witnessed in real time over the past 27 months. Whilst we continue to try and talk with our MPs, councillors and institutions, these demonstrations help us continue to show those in power that this is an issue for so many of their constituents, as well as provide an avenue of support for anyone in the local community who is impacted, saddened or angered by the ongoing violence against Palestinians.”
Red Ribbon solidarity campaign
Organisers are using Sunday’s action to draw particular attention to the Red Ribbon solidarity campaign, launched in December 2025 by the Palestinian Forum in Britain (PFB) calling for the release of prominent Gaza paediatrician Dr Hossam Abu Safiya, and all 9,300 Palestinian prisoners held in Israel including 53 women and 400 children (according to Palestinian prisoners’ rights institutions and figures released by the Israeli Prison Service up to December 2025). Additional demands include to cease the continuing bombing of the Gaza strip by Israel, and a lift on the blockades of food, aid and building materials that the occupation state is also imposing.
After the peaceful march from Central Station up to Grey’s Monument there will be speeches from a variety of community members, and the opportunity for attendees to find out more about the campaigns, write to their MPs, and learn about support networks within the region. The event is set to conclude around 2.30pm.
