Kudos to Simon Clarke, he stabbed Sunak in the chest not the back. However, I am unsure that, when concocting his cunning plan, he expected to be a figure of ridicule following his act of disloyalty to his leader.
I am also unsure he expected people to have to search the internet to find out who he was, because Clarke seems convinced he is a Tory grandee.
The quote by one Conservative minister caught my eye:
“Not sure we should be taking top tips on leadership from Liz Truss’s right hand”.
This opinion should be extended from ‘leadership tips’ to most things. Why would anyone take a blind bit of notice of this taller and more hygienic version of Baldrick.
Blackadder
He always seems to have a cunning plan. He is always, I really mean, always correct and firmly believes that the country is his own personal Blackadder that needs helping out.
Sadly, like Blackadder, the country needs to pat him on the head and gently tell him he hasn’t got a clue what he is talking about.
Like Baldrick he has a vegetable fetish, whereas Baldrick’s was turnips, Clarke’s cheerleading of Liz Truss indicates that his is lettuce.
Positives and negatives
On a positive (?) note, at least the rest of the country is finding out what the Teesside populace has to put up with as their representative in parliament.
On a negative note, the rest of the country is finding out that the Teesside populace voted for him!
Why?
What was he trying to achieve, and on whose behalf?
Was he trying to flush out the lunatic fringe of the Conservative Party to put in letters of no confidence?
Was he trying to curry favour with opaque money think- tanks such as the IEA? It did get him a significant donation from JCB, so a little win there.
Was he trying to make a name for himself, to position himself ready for the post election Conservative Party in whatever iteration it may be? Because if the polls prove correct and the Tories are out soon, there is likely to be a lurch further right politically, and he has already demonstrated that he is willing, able and enthusiastically willing to go there.
