Gateshead is set for local elections this May which could radically alter the political make-up of the area. On 7 May, voters will head to the polls to cast their ballots in what could be a major turning point for councils in the North East. ‘All out’ elections are being held in Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, and South Tyneside – all of which are currently Labour-run. That means every single seat is being contested on those councils, instead of the usual one-third, and that there could potentially be a huge power shift across our region.
The current make-up of Gateshead Council’s 66 seats is as follows:
- Labour: 46
- Liberal Democrats: 18
- Independents: 2
