My life in Gaza: a father’s story of survival

My name is Waseem, and I am a father of three children: Nabeel, Mohammed, and Taym. Life in Gaza has become a daily struggle for survival, where every new day feels like a test we must endure.

We once lived in a modest home, dreaming of a simple and peaceful life. But the war has stolen everything from us – our house, our safety, and even the little joys of everyday life.

Forced to flee under heavy bombing, we joined the long lines of families displaced to the south, carrying our children in our arms, praying to escape death at every step.

But even in displacement, suffering never left us. Hunger and malnutrition haunt my children. They go to sleep with empty stomachs, asking for bread or a sip of clean water. As a father, there is no pain greater than watching your children cry from hunger and knowing you cannot ease their suffering.

One night, the bombing reached us again. This time it was not our home of concrete walls, but our simple tent – the only shelter we had. It collapsed under fire, and once again, we found ourselves running for our lives. By nothing short of a miracle, we survived.

Now, every day is about holding on. I try to be strong for my children, even when I feel broken inside. All I wish for is that Nabeel, Mohammed, and Taym could live as children should – safe, nourished, and free to dream about a future.

Life in Gaza has become a battle of survival against war, hunger, and despair. Yet, amid the ruins, I still cling to hope – that someone, somewhere, will hear our story, feel our pain, and help us keep going.
