James and Janet Sheerin from Newcastle were in London yesterday, protesting with the campaign group, Republic. This is what James had to say – and some photos from the event.
“Because of the illegal arrest of CEO Graham Smith and Republic staff members those of us who at the “Not My King” protest at Trafalgar Square missed out on the planned speeches from leading politicians. Our placards were also confiscated. Half of the Republic supporters were refused access to Trafalgar Square and corralled in Pall Mall. Despite all this we held a noisy but very peaceful demonstration. The aggressive and unwarranted police action has proved helpful in highlighting our cause.
“Janet and I were proud to be there. We want to live in a modern, democratic, European country, protected by an elected Head of State who can protect the constitution and not stand by while a small group of fascists take away our legal rights.”

There were also a protest on Calton Hill, Edinburgh.
