The application, from 6HB Ltd, calls for the conversion of the old red-brick former Queen Alexandra College into 34 new apartments. The style of apartments applied for are as follows:
- 5 three-bedroom bungalows
- 1 three-bedroom house
- 2 three-bedroom apartments
- 23 two-bedroom apartments
- 3 one-bedroom flats
According to documents prepared by Lichfelds, the building has remained vacant since 2020 and has experienced steady deterioration thanks to roof damage caused by the partial collapse of a chimney stack and gable. The report also states there have been several break-ins to the dilapidated ex-college.
The application’s heritage statement adds: “The result of this process is one of high quality and a well-considered development, comprising of a regeneration development on a Listed Building falling into major disrepair. The proposal seeks to deliver aspirational homes in conjunction with high quality restoration of a Grade II Listed Building that has stood empty for several years and is currently being vandalised.
It continues: “The proposal is a sustainable form of development in North Shields, which is also a sustainable location. The details demonstrate that the proposed development will not result in any significant or unacceptable impacts upon the character and appearance of the building, immediate locality or the wider environment, or the amenity of adjoining residents and land uses.“
The building began life in 1909 when it was originally Tynemouth Municipal High School. Tynemouth High School closed in around 1969 and became what was then Norham High School, until that institution changed location in 1973.
The building became listed in 2008 by Historic England, due to its classical design with Art Nouveau influences. It is also considered to be a rare example of an intact 20th school building.
At the time of publication, a decision has not yet been made on the proposals.
