Probably the first big British act to emerge since  Arctic Monkeys, Sam Fender is returning home on Friday 20 December to play a homecoming concert at the Newcastle Arena. Naturally the gig sold out in minutes.

Two further dates have been added at next summer at his beloved Newcastle United’s St James’ Park on Thursday 12 June, Saturday 14 June and Sunday 15 June.

A new album is forthcoming, People Watching will be released on 21 February.

Sam Fender’s current tour

Having seen his current tour on the second of two sell out nights at the 23,500 capacity Co-op Live in Manchester you can expect a great night.

The scattering of new songs debuted showed promise; the new single Wild Long Lie came across as a delicate number and not as immediate as his last single, People Watching, though the latter has only been out for over a month the fans sang along to the track as if it was one of his old favourites.

The six minute Wild Long Lie came took the energy levels down, of all his newer material the track didn’t seem to be as immediate, leaving it to old favourites such as Get You Down and Howden Aldi Death Queue– a song about keeping your distance at a Wallsend supermarket during the pandemic, threatened to blow off the roof of the arena as Fender and his band reached a jubilant climax.

As he and the band ended with Seventeen Going Under and lastly Hypersonic Missiles the fans were singing loudly the “Whoa oooh oooh” refrain. Now imagine how that will sound in a packed St James’ Park next summer- they will probably hear the roar down in his home town of North Shields!
