Baluji Shrivastav – one of the world’s leading sitar players and composers – plays Middlesbrough Town Hall next month, on February 16th.
The concert showcasing Indian classical music in partnership with GemArts is part of the historic venue’s Classical Café series of Sunday afternoon performances.
The shows are organised by Town Hall music engagement programme Musinc, allowing people to listen to classical music in a relaxed atmosphere.
Having performed and recorded with global artists such as Stevie Wonder, Coldplay, Massive Attack, Madness, Shakira, Malu, Boy George & Doves, Baluji has been described by the Evening Standard as a ‘sitarist to the stars.’
As a blind musician, Baluji established the London charity Baluji Music Foundation to promote the participation of disabled people in music. He also founded The Inner Vision Orchestra of professional blind musicians.
For February’s Classical Café performance, Baluji will be accompanied on tabla by Yousuf Ali Khan, who is from the same famous musical dynasty as Ali Akbar Khan.
Yousuf has extensive experience as a performer, workshop leader, and music teacher.
Music Inclusion Manager Sammy Knight said: “We’re so excited to be working with GemArts to bring Indian Classical Music to Middlesbrough Town Hall!
“We’re passionate about promoting diversity across our programme, and are thrilled to have Baluji Shrivastav OBE and Yousuf Ali Khan performing in February’s Classical Café.”
