As the nation prepares to celebrate VE Day, the Government is announcing a new UK-wide veteran support system, called VALOUR, to ensure veterans have easier access to essential care and support.
Backed by £50m of funding, the Government’s aim is for a new network of VALOUR-recognised support centres in every nation and region of the UK to unleash veterans’ full potential. VALOUR will connect local and national services, along with charities, health, employment and housing to shape more tailored local support.
Teesside MP Luke Myer, who has championed local veterans’ issues, welcomed the announcement and committed to “scrutinise” the details.
Luke Myer, MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland, said:
“After the tragic death last year of my constituent, former Royal Marine Sam Morgan, I brought the Government’s Veterans Minister to Teesside to listen to Sam’s family and to local veterans.
“One of the main takeaways from that discussion was that the patchwork of support for veterans is too complex. I’m delighted that the Government have heard this loud and clear and committed to launch better support for those who have served.”
“I will scrutinise the details carefully to make sure it provides the support our armed forces heroes need.”
Veterans Minister, Al Carns, said:
“As a veteran who served for 24 years, I recognise the unique challenges they’ve faced and the skills they possess. This new investment will ensure that every veteran, regardless of where they live, can access joined up support services in the way they need it.
We are creating the UK’s first ever data-driven framework for veterans’ services, ensuring our resources are channelled to where they’re most needed and can make the greatest difference to those who have courageously served their country.”
