In the beginning was the word and in The Awakening, a re-wording of the bible. Rude, lewd and crude, local comedians Kerris Gibson and Nicola Mantalios bring a femme-fresh comedy to Live Theatre, headlining Unearthed Festival in this first outing of their double-act The Feminist Cult Agenda.
With influences from slapstick, comedia dell’arte and 1970s family comedy shows, this is more than a sketch show. Supported by straight man and stooge Mat Mellor, the live performance is interjected with screentime sketches, adverts and charity appeals. No Cliff Michelmore’s Lifeline – adopt an incel, the hardest hitting laugh and no likely offers to take one home today.
Bouncing across stage in pillowed vulvae, Gibson and Mantalios offer a warmth in connection and a headlock twist to the taciturn as they take on some big issues in the currency of the patriarchal screw.
Unearthed Festival at Northern Stage 30 June to 11 July is a showcase of new talent with a feminist slant, celebrating female, non-binary and trans performances alongside scratches, socials and masterclasses – for more information see here.
