Twenty community projects have secured funding from the North of The Tyne’s £1.35m Community Partnership Programme which covers the north and west of the city. The programme aims to support projects that bring communities together to build relationships, create more vibrant neighbourhoods, provide opportunities for residents, and tackle local issues.

In our own ward the Kenton Park Community Association, a charity, has successfully applied to the Partnership and been awarded £59k capital funding and £73k in revenue funding. The money will pay for resurfacing of the hall floor, refurbishment of the soft play area, new heating, hot water, new air conditioning and sensory equipment at Kenton Park Sports Centre. The rest of the cash is to be used to fund community development work across Montagu, Kenton Bar and North Kenton for one year.

In the near future, the charity intends to set up a Friends of North Kenton Park which will work alongside Urban Green to make further improvements to the park including a new wildlife garden thanks to this grant.

Kenton Park Sports Centre

Kenton Park Community Association manages the Sports Centre and nearby Shandon Way Centre, providing a range of affordable leisure activities and sports facilities for all ages.

The sports centre, managed by Bobby Richardson, has rooms to hire from small meeting rooms to a large sports hall and offer space for children’s birthday parties. They provide special events throughout the year such as trips, Halloween, community funday and Christmas parties. Shandon Way is used every weekday by the centre’s partner organisation Journey Enterprises but is also available for community use at weekends and evenings.

Bobby Richardson said:

” We’re delighted at securing the funding from the Local Community Partnership pot to  further develop community provision across Kenton. In the near future the sports centre intends to set up a Friends of Kenton Park , which will work alongside Urban Green to make further improvements to the park including a new wildlife garden.”
